From The Salem Handbook, Historic Salem Incorporated, 1977
- Plan
- Less formal than Georgian or Federal styles. Asymmetrical massing reflects the interior floor pan. Use of wings, towers, and bay windows was common.
- Doorway
- Heavily molded doors, often double and asymmetrically placed. Heavy wooden decoration over the doorway was the main decorative feature. Sidelights and transom disappeared.
- Windows
- Tall and slender, often two over two paned. Bracketed, round headed, paired windows appeared.
- Roofline
- Slight pitch, usually gabled or hipped.
- Materials
- Wood with frequent use of flatboards.
- Decoration
- Heavy wooden brackets over doors and windows and under the eaves. Scroll bracket, bracket with pendant, and ornamental pendant were common bracket forms.
