Less formal than Georgian or Federal styles. Asymmetrical massing reflects the interior floor pan. Use of wings, towers, and bay windows was common.
Doorway
Heavily molded doors, often double and asymmetrically placed. Heavy wooden decoration over the doorway was the main decorative feature. Sidelights and transom disappeared.
Windows
Tall and slender, often two over two paned. Bracketed, round headed, paired windows appeared.
Roofline
Slight pitch, usually gabled or hipped.
Materials
Wood with frequent use of flatboards.
Decoration
Heavy wooden brackets over doors and windows and under the eaves. Scroll bracket, bracket with pendant, and ornamental pendant were common bracket forms.
